Jesus said, ‘I am the true vine….’ John 15 vs 1
Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. vs 4

Prayer
Creator God,
in you we are all we need to be;
through you we grow into all that we long to be;
with you we bear fruits that can be used
and shared and multiplied;
because of you our lives are rich and blessed and fruitful:
so we praise you in song and silence, today and every day.
Amen.

Vines
The cold spring has apparently wreaked havoc with the vines in southern France – will there be a harvest at all from which to make this season’s wine? Vines as all plants are subject to the vagaries of the weather, but in a good year, they are a glorious sight in the dry French countryside, as my picture taken in 2013 shows, in their disciplined rows, pruned for maximum fruiting.
It was a sight familiar to Jesus and his followers, and in John 15, in some of the last words he said to them before his arrest, Jesus says, ‘I am the true vine, and you are the branches'

Reflection
How easy is it to stay abiding in Christ, in the close intimate relationship Jesus talks about? These are beautiful words, all about the relationship of Father, Son and Spirit, one with each other in the Trinity – couched above all in the language of love. And those who follow Jesus are invited to be part of this relationship, as branches on the vine.
In the quietness think about the ways you have been able to stay abiding in God in recent months, using these words, and give thanks:

Meditation
I am the vine.
I am your origin, your nutrients, your mainstay.
Root yourself in me.
Let yourself be fed.
Let yourself grow…closer and deeper.
And in the growing, allow the pruning.
Allow me to prune, to trim,
to cut away your broken branches,
your fruitless parts, your strivings,
branches that are going to seed.
And watch and wait.
Wait for the new shoots.
Wait for the new fruits to bud slowly
and open gently.
Turn to my warmth,
and let your fruits open in my glory. Amen.
